Theodor Heuss – the story of his life is at the same time a history of politics, culture and the age he lived in
On September 12, 1949, Theodor Heuss assumed office as the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany. With his liberal standing and dignified and witty demeanour he was an ideal representative of the still young republic. He gave the office a profile and created respect abroad for the new state. He was nicknamed "Papa Heuss" and enjoyed great sympathy among the population.
Peter Merseburger, the author of several important and highly acclaimed biographies (Kurt Schumacher, Willy Brandt and Rudolf Augstein), has traced the life of this great and even today still exemplary democrat, the story of whose life is also a history of politics, culture and Germany in the 20th century.
