"When Lea Singer writes about music and voices you think that you can hear them as you read." BR-Klassik
Giuseppe Verdi and his wife Giuseppina were seen to be a happy married couple when he met soprano Teresa Stolz – at, of all places, rehearsals for The Force of Destiny. Giuseppina, herself once an acclaimed prima donna, had to put up with the young diva becoming increasingly important for her husband. In 1871, Teresa split up from her fiancé; in 1872 she sang the title role of Aida in the Italian premiere.
From then on, the drama increasingly came to a head. Pressured by Giuseppina to make a decision, Verdi protested, "This woman is to stay or I'll shoot myself." All his life Verdi had wanted to avoid his private affairs becoming the centre of gossip, rumours and headlines, but then this is precisely what happened. In the end, however, they went away on holiday together as a threesome. Giuseppina even remembered her rival in her will. How this came about is a moving human adventure.
"Lea Singer knows how to suck honey out of her research."
