An enchantingly sad story about growing up between love and death
"He was sitting on his bed in hospital – and although he was sitting on his bed, he was wearing a pair of new shoes, red Chucks, the seams of which shone brilliantly white. But you don't need new sneakers in hospital. You don't need any shoes at all when you die."
Mae is in her early twenties and not so long ago she was roaming the streets of Vienna as a punk, living off canned beer and conversations with her friend Tamara about atoms, metaphysics and matters even more complicated. After being convicted of assault, she is sentenced to work at an AIDS-support home. There she meets Paul and falls in love with him. When Paul's illness breaks out, Mae starts fighting to stop him disappearing. She collects his hair and his toe nails like devotional objects and in the end puts some of the air in his room in Tupperware. She wants to be prepared for his death. She has already once before lost a loved one, her older brother, from whom all she possesses is a pair of brand-new red Chucks.
Cornelia Travnicek's novel is ruthlessly honest and with a humorous touch that is now rebellious, now loving.
