Inspector Gerald van Loren's first case – Was it suicide or murder?
While going for a walk one evening, Inspector Gerald van Loren happens to get caught up in a police assignment. A student has fallen from the fourth floor of an apartment block. Everything points to suicide, but Gerald van Loren does not believe this theory.
Behind the back of colleague Batzko, a male chauvinist pig if ever there was one, he starts his own investigations. These take him to a charismatic psychologist who had been treating the dead man in group therapy as a sufferer from BIID (Body Integrity Identity Disorder). People with this disorder paradoxically don't feel "whole" unless a part of their body is missing. Shortly afterwards, another BIID patient is found murdered, and Gerald van Loren gets ever deeper into trouble…
