Helmut Schmidt was one of the most important German chancellors in the 20th century. He was an officer in World War II, taken prisoner by the British and joined the SPD in 1946. He was internationally applauded for his excellent crisis management as the Minister of the Interior in Hamburg during the flood emergency in the city in 1962. This was the breakthrough to a steep political career. He was elected chairman of the SPD parliamentary party in 1967 and had a reputation in the Bundestag as a sharp-tongued speaker. Schmidt made a significant contribution to the SPD as being a party of the people, one that was capable of governing.
Using an almost uniquely huge source base, including hitherto confidential files and correspondence, Hartmut Soell vividly depicts Helmut Schmidt's young years and his political career, his family and spiritual roots and in the process adds new details to the portrait of this man.
