Looking at the heart of a disappearing paradise

Catherina Rust lived as a child in Mashipurimo, a jungle village in the Amazon Basin. The little village is on a tributary of the Rio Paru in Brazil; the next larger city is Belém. While her parents, both Germans, were looking into the way of life of the Aparai-Wayana Indians, Catherina was growing up as an Indian child – at one with nature, secure in the rituals of a Stone Age tribal community.

There is not a journey that can take us further away from our modern life than Catherina Rust's account of the village on the river – a paradise that is about to be lost.

“A plea for a life in harmony with people and with nature.”
