"Wilken has woven an opulent narrative carpet which in it sensuousness and blaze of colour is without compare."

The year is 1617. Alchemist Sallovinus has been murdered in Prague and some of his copperplate engravings stolen - the templates for four costly marble tablets. While all this is going on, the young widow Marie von Langenau arrives at the home of her uncle Remigius. Marie soon finds out that her uncle is guarding a dangerous secret and is in possession of the tablets. When shortly afterwards the enigmatic Bohemian Ruben starts courting her, Marie doesn't know if she can trust him or whether he is merely using her to get at the mysterious artwork.
