"Contemporary Muslim Fashions" is the first major museum exhibition to explore contemporary Muslim women’s dress codes around the world. The curator, Jill D’Alessandro, invited dozens of Muslim representatives from local universities, Islamic centres and mosques to consult on the show. The 80 ensembles on display were all designed to cover the body in keeping with Islamic principles. They range from updated versions of the traditional cloak known as the abaya or the hijab and other forms of traditional clothing, as a basis for a fashionable dress in our own time. In 2015, Muslim women spent $44 billion on modest clothing items alone, a Global Islamic Economy report said. Macy’s introduced a collection of modest clothing, including hijabs, in February 2018 to capture a piece of the lucrative Muslim clothing market. Luxury retailers, including Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry, have taken notice, as have companies that specialize in trendy casual wear, like H&M and Zara. The exhibition is accompanied by a book of 256 pages depicting streetwear to high-end couture from Dubai to Jakarta, London and New York in a lot of colourful illustrations. love D'Artagnan.
